The Majestic Montserrat Monastery

Day trip from Barcelona, Spain (approximately 40kms).

When you head to a major city in Europe like Barcelona it can be really overwhelming with the people, traffic, and things to see and do. A perfect escape from the hustle and bustle can be just 40kms down the road to the mountains of Montserrat.

A short train ride from central Barcelona will take you to the foot of the Montserrat mountains, where you board the cable car to take you up to the monastery. If you are feeling adventurous you can board the funicular (a type of cable car train) and head to the very top of the mountain. The sweeping views are just incredible!

It is believed the original monastery was built around 1025 and then really expanded around the 1220s. Today there is the basilica, monastery, museum, chapels, singing academy, and memorial to explore.

The boy’s choir, known as L’Escolania, is famous for their angelic singing and if you time your visit right you can even see them perform live.

Explore the multiple walking trails to capture different views of the surrounding mountains.

The highlights are the breath-taking views, the intricate details inside the basilica, and the way the buildings are moulded in and around the mountains.

Montserrat is the perfect remote destination to slow things down, reflect, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and soak up the amazing views.
